In 1983 Dr Alec Jeffreys, a lecturer at Leicester University, enthuses to his students and less than impressed wife Sue, on the wonders of DNA. At the same time Chief Superintendent David Baker investigates the murder of school-girl Lynda Mann, setting up his base in the area where she was killed, but failing to make any progress, so that DCC Chapman orders him to concentrate on other crimes. Two years later a newspaper article highlights Jeffreys' discovery that every individual has their own unique DNA and he is called upon to help in a deportation case , which, due to his efforts, is successful. But in 1986, with Lynda Mann's murder a cold case, another young girl, Dawn Ashworth, is killed in the same way and in the same locality. Teen-ager Gavin Hopkirk is the prime suspect and admits to killing Dawn but not Lynda. Hearing of Jeffreys' success Baker seeks him out to prove that Hopkirk killed both girls but Jeffreys' findings reveal that Hopkins did not murder either of them. Written by don @ minifie-1

The entire team pursues the ram raiders who made off with ATMs to a farmhouse. Jake acquits himself well in a fight but the heroine of the hour is Donna. However her partner Alice expresses concern for her day to day safety. Carl and Felix track down vulnerable teenager Eva Pryce, who has been seduced by an older man into living with him but when Eva attempts suicide it leads to Donna's suspension. Following media coverage of the massacre at the silo Joe suggests the family moves away but Laura refuses. Laura is visited by Hester, who takes her hostage in order to trap Leo, whom she believes has betrayed her. A rescue party comprising Mia, Niska and Leo rush to save her and Hester is overcome but at a cost. Consequently the synths reign triumphant with Karen realizing she has a future with Sam though Athena doubts the wisdom of her continuing experiment to revive her daughter and leaves Qualia. Mattie rushes unsuccessfully to stop Leo, Mia and Hester from infiltrating the silo, which they manage to do but many of the synths are killed as they try to escape and Max arrives too late to stop the devastation. Karen comes to see Athena, asking her to make her human, followed by Pete, but they too are caught up in the violence of the escape plan with fatalities resulting as Hester attempts to kill Athena. Niska goes on the run with Astrid whilst Renie, troubled by Sophie's desire to become a synth, reveals that she is a human who has taken on synth-like qualities for her own reasons. He offers to help bring back her child for a price. Niska's consciousness assessment - to see if she is human enough to stand trial - begins with Laura as her advocate whilst at the Hawkins home Mattie reanimates Odi and her brother Toby falls for a synth, Renie, at school. Leo's group moves on but Mia stays behind and, having told him her secret, begins a romance with Ed, noted by his friend Danny. Laura tries to find Niska a lawyer to represent her for her murder charge, a positive result giving synths more rights. With boyfriend Pete Drummond keeping her secret Karen Voss returns to work to track down a special synth sold on the black market for a huge sum whilst Athena travels to England to locate Hobb. Mia commits a little forgery to help Ed save his café, making him realize she has human traits. She is pursued by humans claiming her malfunction needs correcting but the trio escape and are joined by Mia, who argues with Leo over his view that sentient synths should not be so high profile. In California Athena Morrow, a pioneer of synth technology, refuses Khoury's offer to join his company and the Hawkins family get a double shock - Joe being sacked and a visit from Niska. Now fully sympathetic to Anita/Mia and the others as sentient creatures the Hawkins family, assisted by Pete Drummond, threaten to expose Hobb's experiment to the press unless he releases the Synths - which he does though with a tracking device inside Fred. On the run the family and the Synths mingle with the protesters before taking refuge in a church crypt. Having supposedly destroyed Fred Hobb has actually hidden him, aware that the five Synths need to meet up for collective empowerment but Fred escapes and goes on the run. Meanwhile a damaged Odi returns to George who, helped by Niska, mends him whilst Mattie contacts Max and Leo. The latter, though injured, explains how the four Synths saved him after his mother's death and how he is part Synth himself. Mattie persuades her mother to help the group but, thanks to Joe, the police give chase and things do not end well. Leo meets up with Matty but she refuses to admit knowing Anita . However Leo and Alex call on George, who worked on the original synth project with Leo's father and reveals that Leo's father imbued several synths with an alternative programme to give them consciousness. Leo then gets a call from Niska, who has infiltrated an undercover fight club where synths are systematically smashed up but where she has attacked the human punters before escaping.
